“My love for piano was born at the age of 8.  I was the “weird kid” that my parents never had to nag about practicing.  I, myself, took piano lessons until the age of 20.

I believe that regardless of your skill level, there is always something new to learn and techniques to improve on.  I enjoy the challenge of learning new pieces, and the sense of accomplishment it brings when you finally perfect them!”

Education:

University of Guelph Alumnus – Baccalaureate of Biological Sciences, Minored in Music

Level 9 RCM Piano and Theory

Location: Guelph

Specialized Skills: Beginners of all ages (be it 5 to 68 years old!)

Teaching professionally: 2012

Student piano teacher from 2007-2012

When did you start piano Lessons?

I started taking lessons and have been playing since 1995.  I’ve grown up in Guelph and had a piano teacher who I studied at her studio with.

What was something that was hard at the beginning of your lessons?

Note naming. When I was initially learning how note name I was a six to eight-year-old child of immigrant parents, so I did not have the greatest grasp of the English alphabet, let alone know how to spell, “FACE” to name notes in the treble clef. A work around I did up until 10 years old, was memorize where middle C was, and then just repeat the alphabet from A to G until I got to the note I wanted to name. Now, it is one of the areas I stress with beginners, regardless of their age!

I’m really happy that Feely Piano provides good theory worksheets!

What is something that surprised you when you started?

All the acronyms for note naming!

What was your first accomplishment or aha moment in music?

When I moved from doing group lessons with others to private lessons to prepare for my first RCM exam.

What do you think you learned by taking music?

Most definitely that in order to make progress, small good habits need to be built first, and that you won’t always see your progress while you’re doing it!

Education:
Attending Wilfred Laurier University, Bachelor of Music
Level 8 RCM Piano and Voice
Level 9 Theory (Basic Harmony)

Location: Waterloo

Specialized Skills: Beginners of all ages

Teaching since: 2016

When did you start piano?
I started to take lessons when I was six years old.

What was something that was hard at the beginning of your lessons?
I remember moving from the black keys to the white keys, and feeling absolutely shocked when I learned they had letter names. I would sometimes get a little frustrated when I couldn’t remember what a certain note was called, but my teacher always found a way to help me figure it out. A couple weeks later, I forgot it was ever even a problem!

What is something that surprised you when you started?
I was very surprised to learn about all the numbers that go into music. Once I started to understand them, I saw how wonderful all the different pieces of music fit together, and still today I love learning more about them!

What was your first accomplishment or aha moment?
I remember finishing my very first Piano Adventures book, and how proud I was when my teacher took a moment to congratulate me with the certificate at the end of the book. It was so inspiring, I just had to start working on the next one. I’m so happy to be teaching students in home.  My favorite area to teach is Laurelwood Piano Lessons at Home, because parents like when I drive to them.

What do you think you learned by taking music?
I learned that with enough time, anything can be accomplished. I learned that sometimes you have to think outside the box to work out any difficulties, whatever they may be.

Where does Bella teach piano lessons?

Bella teaches piano lessons at home in the following areas:
